to our tarot section. The tarot, that originated over 500 years ago in
northern Italy, is a set of cards featuring 21 trump cards and an extra
face card per suit, in addition to the usual suit (face and pip) cards
found in ordinary playing cards. Tarot cards are used throughout much of
Europe to play Tarot card games.
The early Tarot symbolism was deeply rooted in Medieval and Renaissance
Europe, but over the centuries it has grown to incorporate everything
from Astrology and Kabbalah to Runes (which predate the Tarot by 1000
years) and the I Ching (which predates the Tarot by 2500 years). Today,
the Tarot is far and away the most popular tool for spiritual
introspection in the West.
In English-speaking countries, where the games are largely unknown,
Tarot cards came to be utilized primarily for divinatory purposes with
the trump cards along with the Fool card comprising the 22 major arcana
cards and the pip and four face cards the 56 minor arcana. This means
totally Tarot, pronounced, Teh-roh; does a divination tool comprise 78
cards, divided into the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana.
The Tarot cards are a series of cards embellished with universal images
and ancient symbols, which pictorially represent a summary of all
knowledge, spiritual energies, teaching and wisdom of the sages.
Whatever the origin of the Tarot, it is clear that the symbolism on the
cards is universal, speaking to many different cultures and
philosophies.
